Does Water Help You Lose Weight?

Although this has been touched on a few times, such as in the nutrition article on water, The Role of Hydration in Weight Loss, this is still a very popular question. The reason is not because you do not know the answer, if is because you do not know all the answers. That is right, if this were a multiple-choice question, we would be picking all the above.

Test Question: How Does Water Help You Lose Weight?

  1. Water helps you stay full and fight hunger.

  9. All the Above.

Water is a miracle in the making. Nothing is better for weight loss on its own. Nothing can compare to the benefits of water when considering everything it can do for weight loss. To understand the answer, you should have an understand of all the points.

  • Water helps you stay full and fight hunger.

It is proven to reduce portion size of meals when consumed prior to eating. Water also is shown to help prevent going to seconds.

  • Water can directly burn calories.

It is shown to slightly burn calories when combined with lemon. Lemon water also has other health benefits such as a great antioxidant.

  • Water can raise your metabolism.

It is shown to raise your metabolism up to 30% after consuming at least 17 ounces of ice cold water.

  • Water can prevent metabolic slowdown.

For every percent your body is dehydrated, your metabolism slows down five percent. Simply drinking water prevents you from burning less calories.

  • Water can minimize junk food cravings.

People often confuse thirst for hunger and are proven to consume less when drinking a glass of water. A simple glass of water will often stop you from eating junk food.

  • Water can prevent late night snacking.

Over 90% of late night snacking is caused by people confusing hunger for thirst. Drinking water will stop you from grabbing a bag of chips while you are watching Netflix.

  • Water can reduce water retention.

It may seem counter intuitive, but your body retains water when you are dehydrated. Although you may not lose fat, you will look like you are gaining weight if you are retaining water. Drinking water will flush it out.

  • Water can improve digestion.

Another ‘this does not help burn fat but makes you look and feel good’ point. Water promotes digestion and will help push out waste which would make you look bloated and feel sluggish.

Does water help you lose weight?

Not only does it do everything I mentioned, it does more. Personally, I now start my day with a large glass of ice water, about twenty ounces. I quickly gulp it down. Before I did this, I would need two cups of coffee and a cold shower to get more. Now, I drink a glass of water and I am instantly awake and ready to tackle my day. This was a significant impact on my daily productivity and absolutely improved my personal weight loss.

The biggest impact of water for me was what I did not have in its place. No more soda, even diet. I started using water flavor enhancers and adding electrolytes to my water.  Quickly I felt better after a couple days and I lost weight. I was always a diet soda drinker, and I even lost weight switching from diet soda to water. Why? The fake sugar in diet foods makes you crave more food.

If I had to tell people the single best change to start today to lose weight, it would be drink water. One glass before every meal. Another glass when you want to snack. One glass when you wake up. And one glass before bed when you feel like eating. Then swap out water for soda and juice and the pounds will start dropping off. Asking if Water can Help You Lose Weight is really a silly question.
